Retreats, Service & Justice
LaMP is committed to finding ways to live out Christian faith by serving others and doing what we can to create a more just community and world. This includes learning, volunteering, and doing advocacy work together. In the past, we have participated in protests, engaged in faith-based advocacy around immigration and hunger, and taken trips to the U.S.-Mexico border to learn about immigration and the southern U.S. to learn about racial justice work.
LaMP is also committed to resisting productivity and achievement culture by finding times to rest, pray, and have fun. Join us for opportunities to be replenished together throughout the year through retreats, fun outings, and more.
Opportunities for Retreats, Service & Justice Engagement in 2022-2023:
A New Heaven & New Earth: World Student Christian Federation Conference
September 14-18, 2022
Princeton University
LaMP will be bringing a group to this national conference for progressive Christian students. Join us as we gather together across campuses, denominations and national boundaries for a time of worship, prayer, Bible study, social analysis, conversation, and strategic planning to reckon with the moral injustices of our time, including poverty, white supremacy, empire, and ecological devastation; to build community for the journey together toward healing; and to reimagine a new world, a new heaven and earth, and explore our role in bringing about that vision. Fall Day Retreat
Saturday, October 22, 9:00am-3:00pm
Hiking and Pumpkin Patch
All students are welcome to join The Vine community as we head up about an hour north of the city for some hiking and the chance to connect with God and one another in creation. We will also make a stop at a pumpkin patch along the way. Transportation is provided from Manhattan via car or van. Bring a sack lunch. Participation is free but please email Becca at pastor@thevinenyc.org by 10/15 to RSVP.
Faith and Justice Trip: Pine Ridge Reconciliation Center
Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota
March 12-18, 2023
Join us as we visit the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota for a week of deep listening, relationship building and learning with the Lakota people who live at Pine Ridge. This is a cross-cultural opportunity for students that will shed light on the role the Christian Church has played in the development of our shared story with the Lakota people both for harm and for healing. For more information, click here. Interested? Email Becca by December 1.
Volunteer at Broadway Community
Our host congregation and partner, Broadway Presbyterian Church, is home to a daily soup kitchen and food pantry called Broadway Community. Broadway Community serves hundreds of food insecure neighbors each week and always needs volunteers, whether one-time or on-going. All students of all and no faith traditions are welcome and encouraged to volunteer. Interested in signing up? Email Becca.
